Hair Extensions Care Guide
Your extensions are an investment. Treat them well and they will keep showing up for you.
This guide covers everything you need to know — from first wear to long-term care — whether your extensions are straight, wavy, curly, coily, or virgin textured. The better the care, the longer the life.
Understanding Your Extensions
Cayre Beauty offers two distinct types of hair extensions — and knowing which you have shapes how you care for them.
Remy Human Hair
Our Remy extensions are sourced with all cuticles intact and aligned in the same direction. This gives the hair its softness, natural movement, and longevity. Remy hair can be washed, conditioned, heat styled, and treated much like your own hair.
Virgin Textures — The Texture Edit by Cayre Beauty
Our virgin textured extensions are completely unprocessed — no dye, no chemical relaxer, no heat treatment. The curl, coil, or kink pattern is entirely natural, which means the hair behaves exactly as it grew. Virgin textured hair is the most authentic match for natural hair types and requires moisture-first care to stay at its best. Because it has never been chemically altered, it also has the longest potential lifespan of any extension — with the right routine, virgin textured pieces can last several years.
Before You Wear Them
Before wearing for the first time, gently detangle your extensions from tip to root using a wide-tooth comb, a soft loop brush, or your fingers. Never pull through knots from the root down — textured hair in particular needs to be handled from the ends upward.
If your extensions feel slightly dry out of the packaging — which can occasionally happen with virgin textured pieces during transit — apply a small amount of lightweight leave-in conditioner or oil to the lengths before wearing. This is especially important for kinky and coily textures, which need moisture to maintain definition and prevent frizz.
For virgin textured pieces specifically: the first wash is important. Wash, deep condition, and allow the hair to air-dry before wearing for the first time. This activates the natural curl pattern and gives you the most accurate picture of how the hair will look and behave on your head.
Washing
Wash your extensions every 8–15 wears depending on how much product you apply. Overwashing strips moisture — underwashing causes build-up and tangling. Find your rhythm and stick to it.
For virgin textured pieces, wash more frequently if you use heavier creams or butters to maintain the curl pattern — build-up dulls the texture over time.
How to wash:
- Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water — never hot
- Add a small amount of sulphate-free, moisturising shampoo
- Submerge the extensions and gently work the product through in a downward motion, root to tip
- Never scrub, bunch, or rub the hair together — this causes matting, particularly in curly and coily textures
- Rinse thoroughly until the water runs completely clear
Conditioning:
- Apply a generous amount of moisturising conditioner from mid-length to tip
- For curly, coily, and kinky textures — and always for virgin textured pieces — use a deep conditioner and leave it on for 10–15 minutes. This is non-negotiable for maintaining curl pattern and softness
- For virgin textures, a protein-free deep conditioner works best — these fibres are strong and do not need protein treatment, only moisture
- Avoid applying conditioner to the weft, clip, or tape area — this weakens the bond over time
- Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle and enhance shine
Drying
How you dry your extensions matters as much as how you wash them — especially for textured styles.
- Gently squeeze excess water from the hair using a microfibre towel or a soft cotton t-shirt — never wring or twist
- For straight and wavy extensions, lay flat or hang to air-dry
- For curly, coily, and kinky textures, scrunch the hair upward gently to encourage the curl pattern to reform as it dries
- For virgin textured pieces, allow the hair to dry completely undisturbed — handling it too much while wet disrupts the natural pattern
- Never brush curly or coily extensions while wet — this separates the curl and causes frizz
- Allow extensions to dry completely before storing or wearing
Detangling
Detangling is where most damage happens — rushing it costs you months of wear.
- Always detangle before and after washing
- Start at the tips and work upward in small sections — never root to tip
- Use a wide-tooth comb, a detangling brush, or your fingers for curly and coily textures
- Apply a detangling spray or leave-in conditioner if the hair feels resistant
- Work slowly and patiently — force is never the answer
For kinky, coily, and virgin textured pieces specifically, finger detangling is often the most gentle and effective method.
